How to lay turf: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transforming your yard with fresh turf is an exciting project, but proper preparation and installation are key to long-term success. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a lush, healthy lawn.
Step 1: Plan Your Yard
Turf should always be laid last in your landscaping project to avoid damage from foot traffic. Ensure the area is suitable by considering factors like shade, mowing ease, and water access.
Key Considerations:
- Drainage: Prevent water from pooling on your lawn or flowing toward buildings.
- Timing Your Order: Turf is perishable and should be laid immediately upon delivery.
- Drying Out: Keep an eye out for curling, thinning, or color changes, which signal a need for more water.
- Seedhead Growth: If seedheads appear, your lawn may be stressed and in need of water or fertiliser.
Step 2: Choose a Suitable Grass Type
Selecting the right turf is crucial. Different varieties perform differently based on sun exposure, foot traffic, and water availability. Consult a professional for guidance on the best option for your space.
Step 3: Check Your Soil
Before laying turf, test your soil’s pH—it should be between 5.5 and 7. If necessary, adjust with soil amendments. A sandy loam base is ideal, while clay-heavy soil should be improved with sand and organic matter.
Step 4: Measure Your Area
Calculate the square meterage of your yard by breaking it into geometric shapes. Add 5% extra to account for cutting around edges and obstacles. Use an online turf calculator for assistance and order from a trusted supplier.
Step 5: Prepare the Base
- Apply a non-selective herbicide to remove existing vegetation (may require two applications).
- Turn over the soil and remove debris.
- Ensure the soil is at the correct pH and add necessary amendments.
- Set levels correctly—keep soil 30-40mm below edges to allow for turf thickness.
Step 6: Lay the Turf
- Apply a starter fertiliser to the base and rake lightly.
- Lay turf as soon as it arrives, watering each section as you go.
- Start from a straight edge and lay in a brick pattern. On slopes, lay turf across the incline.
- Shape turf around edges and roll to ensure good soil contact. Water deeply once complete.
Step 7: Aftercare (First 6 Weeks)
- Watering: Deeply water daily for the first few weeks, then reduce gradually.
- Foot Traffic: Minimise walking on the lawn until it is well established.
- Mowing: The first mow should be on a higher setting after about four weeks.
- Fertilising: After six weeks, apply an NPK fertiliser and continue feeding every 8-10 weeks.
By following these steps, your new turf will thrive, providing a beautiful, healthy lawn for years to come. Need advice? Contact us for expert guidance!
